Editorial

Welcome to the second issue of Thorn in the Side, which should reach you around the Summer Solstice. The ancient Midsummer festival receives no sanction from the authorities, which is all the more reason to celebrate it!

The cover of this issue is a collage of some of the postcards available in the shop. Inside, this quarter's unlikely bedfellows include Henry Rollins and Terence McKenna. We also have articles about small presses, and the new magazines available in the shop, an exclusive photo-feature, and the usual readers' Shorts.

Want to be in the next issue of Thorn in the Side? Send us your articles, letters, pictures, poems, etc. at the shop:

A number of people commented that the first issue "had no pictures or conversations in it". Since none of the editorial team can draw for toffee (or even treacle), this won't change, unless... you have any sketches, cartoons, drawings, or graphics that you'd like to contribute.

The deadline for Issue Three will be Monday, 21st August, 2000.

Apology

In Issue One, throughout Gen Doy's article, we misspelt the name of Karun Thakar. This was entirely our fault: our apologies.

Shorts

St. Ives' Painter

Boats bobbing
cradled by an arm of water.

Considering the counter-image
the easy give-and-take
between colour and colour
plane and shape
light whetting his palate
with quiet harmonies.

How the boats in the harbour
rocked like crescent moons
of weighted water.

The reflective dance of circles
colour-chords

punctuated by vertical rhythms
of sails and masts.
