Flickering & Retching - Lights & Liquids

The Second Lecture: the Doctor Gordon Tripp's experiential research into Altered States of Consciousness

Having just finished a 20 minute Creativity Enhancement brain-entrainment session on my Mind-Altering machine - a MindLab no less - I sat down to write this lecture on the experience that I'd been unconsciously composing while consciously having the experience.

Let me recall, that I first encountered the so-named MindLab through a friend at a poetry reading in memory of the recently late Allen Ginsberg, at some sexy café in downtown Boho Soho London. As well-known poets and painters spun hot wax on the technics, I spied this friend tapping his foot blissfully , while wearing what appeared to be a walkman for the eyes. An almost imperceptible flicker of red light emanated from the lightweight mirror-shades he wore, which seemed to be connected, via an electric cord to a small black box, which also had red flashing lights on it. Not wanting to stare at my friend, I gazed around the room. The joint was heaving, good-looking young haircuts were crowded around several Formica-topped tables, their chins resting in their cupped hands. I ordered a coffee, in a glass cup with extra sugar at the bar, and while I'm waiting for my friend to stop flickering I steal another survey of the bar, and noticed that all the punters have closed eyes staring sightlessly into the flickeg patterns of the many DreamMachines which were fitted to each of the tables. What a blissed out place this really was. In memory of Allen Ginsberg, fly to heaven on our gathered collective trip, Allen, fly and dream for us. Finally, my friend removed the mirror-shades and beckoned me over to him, as if he'd known that I was waiting for him. He handed me the frames and I went off on my first paraliminal mind-bending light-frequency cerebro-psychic mind-ride.

During this, very-public preliminary mind-ride I quickly found that I encountered the vision of a very distinctive green glass chalice, swirling out from an all-embracing glowing, flickering mist. In a later preliminary mind machine visualisation session, I recreated the chalice in minute detail from the memory of this first trip. Later still, another friend revealed to me the very chalice of my visions, the exact physical resemblance of my own astral chalice. I had not told my friend about the chalice, nor had I known of the existence of the real chalice. Pretty soon after these experiences I acquired a MindLab of my own.

Let me elucidate further, my easy-to-use Mind-Machine, for relaxation, accelerated learning and improved mental fitness, is a small black control box attached to a pair of mirror-shades and at the switch of a few simple buttons LEDs in the lenses begin to flash rhythmically, pulses of light blend to create beautiful swirling patterns of colour through my closed eyes, from there my mind is taken on a pre-programmed journey, from mind-state frequency to other mind-state frequency, focussing in full control, my mind's resources in balance, achieving deep meditative states and personal growth.

At the time my interest in this Mind Machine was in its Visualisation session, which I began using daily in conjunction with a traditional esoteric discipline. I could see that it should be possible to incorporate the use of Mind Machine into a programme aimed towards spiritual enlightenment, somewhat along the lines of Timothy Leary's suggested use of acid and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. However, the true illuminatory function of this remarkable machine remained elusive to me until very recently while undergoing enforced and protracted convalescence subsequent to oral/cranial surgery.

It was during my painful convalescence that I began to see the spiritual healing possibilities of the MindLab, particularly used in conjunction with more traditional medical techniques, which I have now been developing over a number of months. The conventional regimen for the healing of surgical wounds involves repeated and prolonged submersion in Saline Solution. My particular condition required that I flood my oral/cranial cavity with Saline Solution in fixed three minute sessions, in order to aid healing, dissolve stitches and wash away pus. The suggested method laid out below is adapted entirely to the needs of my personal circumstances, and therefore should not be taken as applicable in every case.

Methodology

The equipment you will need to perform a Saline Solution MindLab Meditation is a MindLab, a container that will hold four quarts of fluid, a connecting hose of adequate length, a stop-watch, a clamp of some kind to stop the flow of fluid when it becomes necessary, a good lubricant, and ordinary oral tip, and a bucket or sink readily available to expel the fluid when required.

It is best to enter the Saline Solution MindLab Meditation from a standard Yoga Lotus position, but with the back arched into an improbable position, the forehead resting on the floor between the soles of the feet, wearing the mirror-shades, set the MindLab to the pre-programmed Cosmic Unity frequency. Holding this position begin to count slowly and rhythmically to thirty while preparing the Saline Solution. Do not start the stop-watch until all the fluid, or as much as possible, has been absorbed into the oral cavity.

Place four quarts of warm Saline Solution into the container. It is not usually possible to take the entire four quarts at one time, at least not at first. When starting with the Saline Solution MindLab Meditation, inject only enough fluid until you feel full. Hold it as long as you can. Keep adding more Saline until it becomes necessary to expel the entire amount. repeat this several times until the returns are clear. As soon as the oral cavity is clean you will be able to retain four quarts. You must try this again and again until this is possible, once the four quart capacity has been achieved you may start the stop-watch.

When performing the Saline Solution MindLab Meditation , assume different positions and roll from side to side so that the Saline is able to run in, as sometimes there is a kink in the oral cavity, and many times just a change of position allows a great deal more Saline to flow in. A great help in filling the entire oral cavity with Saline is to assume the proper positions so that the solution can flow through the cavity by following its natural curves. Aside from the above mentioned Lotus-style position reputable practitioners recommend a Recovery-type position, with the head dangling over the sink as an added precaution. It is well to note that always the head should be lower than the abdomen or the feet, depending on which is lowest.

You may be bothered with cramps while the oral cavity is filling. If this should happen, immediately stop the stop-watch, turn off the Saline with the clamp and take in a slow deep breath through the nose, on no account stop the MindLab or attempt to breathe through the mouth. Hold the breath for two to three seconds only then let it out through your mouth, this should simultaneously expel the Saline at the same time. Refill with Saline and repeat this several times if necessary until the cramping stops, or until the full three minute Meditation as been achieved (as judged by the stop-watch).

Once the full three minute Saline Meditation has been achieved, stop the stop-watch and count slowly back down from thirty, gently expelling the Saline and removing the mirror-shades.

If blood is noted in the Saline, oozing from the nose, ears or rectum at any time during the performance, competent medical advice should be sought immediately.

Results

The first observation noted during a Saline Solution MindLab Meditation is that no breath can be taken via the mouth, hence the practitioner is forced to become hyper-sensitively aware of their own breath in and out, through the nasal cavities. This aids the entering of meditative states which the MindLab may be seen to induce.

Secondary observations, visual/aural interruptions, sensations of energy movements and other general psychedelic effects have been noted below:

Across all the sessions I have visualised, shimmering behind the swirling flicker across my physical sight, a number of recurrent visions, which are revealing themselves to be evolving and increasingly malleable with each manifestation. While working with the Saline Meditation technique I have many times attempted to project away physical pain, I have visualised my pain into the centre of a mandala, spinning and gyrating before me. A golden or silver fog may appear glowing and billowing, I have watched it morph into a fierce dog and fade into mist, and the pain rose up and receded in rhythm with my breathing, and the flashing spinning wheel visions which the MindLab lights were inducing in my consciousness. Or it is a veil, concealing, ain soph aur, this far and no further. An eye often appears, sometimes solid and three dimensional, sometimes a flattened disk, sometimes spinning, sometimes clockwise, sometimes not.

Most frequently, I have experienced the sudden vision of a particular symmetrical geometric shape. My experiential notes concerning this shape under the Saline Meditation technique are reproduced here: "I felt the stinging salt water seep deep in to the sliced and sutured flesh of my mouth, soak down in to the injured cells and flare up in a blinding flash of pain, right behind the eyes, a red and purple checkerboard polygon cracked open in front of my vision, pain drew out to a fine surgical steel needle intensity searing." At this point I gubbed 2 of the codeine and morphine pills I had been issued by the surgeon and therefore any further observation proved useless, blunted. Since starting with the Mind Machine I have experienced this same image spontaneously flash up in my mind independently of the Mind Machine, some might call it a flashback, usually appearing at times of extreme relaxation and peace, just as I'm falling asleep, or after orgasm. I have painted an interpretation of the shape in my Magickal Record as a mandala, and subsequently the visualised image has transformed into a replica of the painted version. The vision increasingly resembles the imitation.

The Visualisation session could also be used in conjunction with mind-altering substances themselves, although this is really only an option in two possible instances. Either the user wishes to titillate a drug-ravaged palate, numbed out by nights shot down dead in searing chemical intensities. Or the user wishes to push their individual ego out into incomprehensible other-realms, in order to achieve oneness with the Collective Consciousness. I myself have become increasingly disappointed and skeptical with the drug-route to enlightenment, particularly in relation to the Saline Solution Technique.

Indeed, the Saline Solution of itself leads to a necessary single-pointed state of awareness, in that the Saline practitioner is prevented from falling so deeply into a meditative state that they lose consciousness and technically become asleep by the knowledge that in order to avoid accidentally inhaling the Saline Solution the practitioner must remain present. I became acutely aware of the potential for danger in this mixing of the drug/medical/psychic disciplines recently while performing the Mouthful of Salt Water Meditation after an uncharacteristically potent spliff in a steamy bathroom, I quote:

... I felt my whole body fall into rhythm with breathing patterns, finding a medium and connection with the visual patterns forming themselves before my closed eyes. I became aware of the breath moving into and out of the cells of my body, every cell of my body, simultaneously, all at once. Almost precisely co-incident with this sensation the Saline Solution seemed to cool to exactly the temperature of the inside of my mouth. The obstruction, the fluid gag of Saline Solution seemed to disappear, its temperature merging itself smoothly and effortlessly with the temperature of the flesh of my mouth, with the rhythm of my breathing, the inhalation and exhalation of my cells, the whole of my body in unison, rhythmic unison with my in-out breath. I seemed to float out and merge with the totality of the universe, I slipped off out into union with all. I found myself standing at the feet of an Egyptian deity, Anoubis I believe, looking upwards, I saw a towering column that transmogrified into a sphinx, flanked by twylons. I recognised it to the place depicted on The Moon, the 30th Atu, from A.C. and Lady Frieda Harris' Thoth deck.

I was far far away, and so I took a sudden, invigorating gulp of air, to bring myself back under awareness, and narrowly escaped drowning myself on my own mouthwash.

Other Possibilities

Herbal High enemas, vaginal douches and effects under prolonged masturbation...

Interesting, intriguing, eclectic as these possibilities may be I would caution for a degree of restraint, sobriety and discipline to be used. I myself have fallen victim to the ways of excess, and if it had not been for the understanding and tolerance of my wife and family, I am sure that the high enema decoction of Slippery Elm and Raspberry Leaf, combined with the unlimited time/space continuum psychedelic vision MindLab programme could easily have been my downfall too.

Sobriety is a catch word when we realise that another possible use of the Mind Machine may, indeed, be in the overcoming of drug addiction itself. I myself abstained from all addictive intoxicants (including strong coffee and chocolate) for several months over the summer, simply by replacing them with an appropriate Mind Machine session. Although my experiment was of a limited duration, and made no serious attempt to permanently retrain the mind. Perhaps, by means of Personal Reprogramming, it may become possible for habitual substance addicts to break free of their destructive life-style patterns and re-invent their minds.

I am sure that William Burroughs, as the co-inventor of the mother of all mind entrainment machines, the cumbersome and bulky DreamMachine, would have been a firm advocate of these pocket-sized evolutions, especially with their possible junk addiction applications.

Although it is possible that the cured junkies would get wise and begin developing their psychick abilities, and then... well then, we could watch them raiding the collective consciousness, selling off all the astral heirlooms and basking, their own squalid splendour radiating.
