It was 20 years ago that unprecedented police force was employed in order to prevent a convoy of new-age travellers, peace protestors, green activists & festival-goers from reaching Stonehenge, where they had intended to establish the 12th Annual Free Festival. Over 1300 police officers ambushed, assaulted, and arrested the 450 travellers in what became known as The Battle of the Beanfield.
Andy Worthington has conducted extensive interviews with a range of people who were there on the day, including travellers, journalists, senior police officers, and of course the Earl of Cardigan whose testimony was so important in the subsequent court cases. These interviews, along with previously unseen photos and chapters setting the historical context, make this book the definitive account of what really happened in Savernake forest that day.
