A Misericord (from the Latin words for `pity' and `heart'), is a carved wooden rest designed to give some comfort to the monks during the very long hours of service at many abbeys and cathedrals in Europe. It formed the underneath of the choir seat and, though only seen when tipped up, was often decorated with rich and artistic carvings.
