Gerald Gardner and the Cauldron of Inspiration - An Investigation into the Sources of Gardnerian Witchcraft

Philip Heselton

The purpose of this book is to present the results of the continuing investigation started in the authors book Wiccan Roots. It looks at the crucial 10 years from 1944 to 1954, during which time Gardner's own practise of witchcraft developed from the more shamanic practises to the distinctive shape of modern Wicca. The various influences on Gardner are examined, including: the practises of the New Forest Coven, the ideas of Margaret Murray, Aleister Crowley and the O.T.O, the establishment of the Museum on the Isle of Man, his writing of High Magic's Aid and Witchcraft Today and the influence of Edith Woodford-Grimes (Dafo). The various versions of Gardner's Book of Shadows are examined and the significance of Gardner and his legacy in the modern world.
